Bank of America supports Durham READS

Like the Carolina Hurricanes, Bank of America has made a significant donation of $5,000 to the Durham READS summer reading program.

Durham READS embodies CIS of Durham's philosophy of combining the heart and the head. The heart is our commitment to helping all of Durham's kids succeed. The head is using programs that are backed up by research showing that they really have an impact.

Durham READS is a simple program. Rising 4th and 5th grade students who are reading below grade level are mailed a book every week of the summer. The kids don't have to go any where. The books show up in their mailbox once a week all summer long. Each book is matched to their reading ability so that it is challenging but readable for them. The students also read to an adult in their home for a couple of minutes every week. Simple and effective. Dr. James Kim of Harvard University found that the program was as effective as summer school, but cost a lot less per student.

We are piloting it with over 75 students at EK Powe Elementary School and Club Boulevard Humanities Magnet School.

If you are interested in making a donation to support a student's reading over the summer, please make a contribution online or contact us at the office. $200 is all it takes to reverse the summer reading loss for a student.

At times, teachers are fighting an uphill battle. On average, kids from low income families lose two months of reading skills every summer. So while our teachers are working extraordinarily hard during the school year to improve kids' reading, ground is lost every summer. How frustrating!

This is one reason why schools alone cannot make kids succeed in school. The community needs to step in to complement the work of our teachers. This summer, CIS of Durham is partnering with MetaMetrics (a Durham-based company specializing in reading assessment) to pilot a simple but very effective summer reading program based on the research of Dr. James Kim at Harvard University.

We can only do this type of work with community partners. For instance, the Carolina Hurricanes donated $10,000 to pilot the Durham READS summer reading program. That is incredibly generous! This is just one more example of how much our community cares about our kids. - Bud Lavery
